One of the pride and joys of owning a boat is showing it off in the water on your relaxing weekend away from work. Unfortunately, you can’t simply snap your fingers and force your boat to appear, you’ll have to haul it there in your trailer. Boat trailers are criminally underrated and most boat owners don’t spend nearly enough time talking about how to get the most out of their hauling vehicles. You aren’t going to get very far with your boat trailer if you don’t have quality tires installed. The tires of your boat trailer are the only point of contact between your trailer and the rest of the road, so it is important to make sure that you take proper care of them. Unfortunately, many of us fall into the habit of ignoring our tires until a problem presents itself and that isn’t the smartest way to operate. Instead, you can employ routine tire maintenance checks in order to cut down on the possibility of problems later on. So why is it important to always be checking your boat trailer tires? What can you do to keep them in great shape?

1) Check Inflation Level – Every time that you take your boat trailer out of the garage, take a walk around the vessel in order to check the PSI of the tires. Underinflated tires can lead to blown out tires while you are driving down the highway. Keep a tire inflation device on hand and take care to keep your tire pressure at their appropriate level.

2) Load Bearing Weight – You’ll also need to keep in mind the actual load-bearing capabilities of your tires when hauling your boat around. Tires are only graded to handle so much weight. When you exceed the weight listed on the side of your boat trailer tires, you run the risk of blowing them out or causing equally damaging events while driving around.

3) Keep an Eye on Tread – Finally, you’ll want to make sure that you keep tires on your boat trailer that have an appropriate amount of tread on them. The more you use your tires, the more the tread gets worn away. Eventually, your tire will go bald and when it is bald you will be more likely to slide while out on the road.
